Castle Howard became famous all over the world when it starred as Brideshead Castle in Granada TV's 1981 series Brideshead Revisited, starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews and Diana Quick. Twenty-seven years later, a new generation will see Castle Howard revisiting its role as Brideshead Castle in a new feature film to be released in the autumn of 2008.

For five weeks in the summer of 2007, Castle Howard played host to a crew from Ecosse Films, who were making a new film of Brideshead Revisited based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh. The film features Michael Gambon and Emma Thompson as Lord and Lady Marchmain, and Matthew Goode as Charles Ryder, Ben Whishaw as Sebastian Flyte, and Hayley Atwell as Julia Flyte.

On 1 June 2008 Castle Howard will be opening once-ruined rooms in the High South used as sets in the film, and now featuring an exhibition on the new film. These High South rooms were damaged in fire of 1940, and their ruinous state meant they could be used to construct sets for the film.

Visitors will be able to see the sets constructed in the shell of the High Saloon, with fabulous views over the gardens, and a unique viewpoint up to the Dome and down to the Great Hall. Visitors will be able to see damage from the 1940 fire, sets constructed for the new film and exhibitions on new and old productions of Brideshead Revisited filmed at Castle Howard.

Whilst at Oxford University a chance encounter with the charming and decadent Sebastian Flyte, son of Lord Marchmain, draws Charles Ryder into the exclusive world of British high society. For the impressionable Charles, Sebastian's world of money, glamour and outrageous behaviour makes for a seductive cocktail. Sebastian takes Charles under his wing and when he's invited to 'Brideshead', the Flyte family's magnificent ancestral home, Charles becomes infatuated with Julia, Sebastians beautiful sister.

Charles's desire for Julia soon escalates into an awkward obsession that under the eye of the fearsome and disapproving Lady Marchmain, he will struggle to satisfy.

Together they visit Venice where Charles's attempt to seduce Julia jeopardises his friendship with the brother and sister he has come to love so much. Cast aside by the family, Charles witnesses the destruction of Sebastian and Julia from afar; as Sebastian's reckless behaviour spirals out of control and Julia is married off to an opportunistic businessman.

Charged with finding the wayward Sebastian, Charles is lead to an unhappily married Julia. At last they conduct a passionate affair fearful of the strong catholic faith that runs deep into the Marchmain family. The couple dare to plan a future together; however the return of a dying Lord Marchmain to Brideshead forces Julia to make the ultimate decision...

The only chance of happiness lies with Julia escaping Brideshead and her past...
